![]() ![]() This makes Kisuke Urahara relatively obscure as Kakashi's and Satoru's counterpart, along with the fact that Kisuke lacks Kakashi's foster father vibes and Satoru Gojo's excellent humor. That may be partly because Bleach is the weakest of the original big three while Naruto continues to dominate the shonen scene, and Jujutsu Kaisen hit the ground running as a fresh, fan-favorite shonen series that rivals the likes of My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer. These three characters all fit the "goofy shonen mentor" archetype, but the overall anime fandom evidently prefers Kakashi and Satoru over Kisuke, often comparing Kakashi and Satoru while leaving Kisuke out of the conversation entirely. Few characters in modern shonen anime have both roles at once, but Kisuke Urahara does, and that gives him a much-needed advantage over his counterparts, Kakashi Hatake and Satoru Gojo. What sets Kisuke apart is that he isn't just a scientist, but also a "goofy shonen mentor" type, and he appears to identify with both. Kisuke's pursuit of advanced science may not make him unique in the world of shonen anime, with other anime characters like the teenage scientist Senku Ishigami and the villainous Orochimaru also using brilliant science to get ahead in unexpected ways. The Quincy medallions are now useless against the Soul Reapers and the power of Kisuke's science, giving Kisuke a much-needed niche as not just Ichigo's mentor, but a cunning scientist who can invent his way to victory when brute force will fail. That is why Äs Nödt, Bambietta Basterbine, BG9, and Cang Du gave back their stolen bankai, which quickly evened the odds in this desperate battle. Kisuke's contribution is a series of all-new spirit pills that will briefly Hollowfy anyone's bankai, forcing the Sternritter to discard their stolen bankai or risk fatal exposure to Hollow essence. The Soul Reapers have shaken off their complacency and learned to train and grow as fighters, using all-new techniques such as advanced Shunko or shikai combo strikes to fight the Sternritter in round 2. Otherwise, Kisuke's role is all about innovative science, which ties in to the resourceful thinking that the Soul Reapers have recently learned to embrace. So far, Kisuke only directly fought the mighty Sternritter by helping Ichigo defeat Quilge Opie in Hueco Mundo. RELATED: Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War Arc Has a Serious Villain Problem ![]() Now, in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Kisuke is contributing to the Soul Reapers' counterattack not just with sword attacks and kido spells, but his advanced science, the likes of which not even Captain Kurotsuchi has seen. Aizen was the traitor, but it was Kisuke Urahara's science projects that originally made Aizen's plans a reality. The scheming Sosuke Aizen stole that Hogyoku and later used it to create his Arrancar army, including the ten Espadas, and Aizen's plan also kick-started the entire Soul Society arc. ![]() Kisuke also studied Hollows and Soul Reapers before inventing the Hogyoku, a spherical object that breaks down the barrier between Soul Reapers and Hollows. For example, Kisuke was the one who recruited a young Mayuri Kurotsuchi and freed him from the Maggot's Nest detainment center, allowing Mayuri to become a key member of squad 12 and its future Captain. Kisuke training Ichigo may have impacted Bleach's plot in a big way, Kisuke's scientific pursuits left an even bigger mark on Bleach's story. Even if Kisuke Urahara was introduced in Bleach's first season as a typical "quirky shonen mentor" type, complete with a secret underground training zone and his own zanpakuto, this is not Kisuke's sole role in Bleach's story. ![]()
